Spring into Stories

April 2024 Newsletter

Welcome to the first newsletter from me, Catherine Tavares!

As a recap for those who have just recently stumbled upon my Internet doorstep, I am a science fiction and fantasy author of short fiction. This little newsletter is my way of keeping you updated on everything I’m doing in the world of SFF storytelling, from new story releases to works in progress to what’s grabbed my interest.

So, let’s get into it.

The Story Thus Far

I’ve had a busy start to 2024 in terms of publishing with at least one new story coming out each month so far.

“Draconis astronomus” is out now with the Winter 2024 edition of Dragon Gems. You can order it in digital or print, paperback or hardback, from multiple retailers.

“The Fine Art of Spellweaving” was released with Stupefying Stories’ Showcase and is free to read on their site.

“They Will Dance Among Planets” was published with Flash Point SF and is also free to read on their website.

“Sacrifice”, my first ever dark fantasy drabble, is out in Shacklebound’s Drabbledark III anthology and is available for purchase in digital or paperback editions.

Forthcoming

“By Any Other Name” is coming out on April 12th within the pages of Shacklebound’s Programmed Hearts anthology, now available for pre-order, so make sure you claim your copy.

“The Freedom That is Dragon” and “She Chose the Dragon” will both be released in Wyrms II, another Shacklebound anthology, on April 26, 2024 and also now available for pre-order.

WiP Check In

At the beginning of the year, I participated in a flash fiction writing contest with the goal to produce 6 new flash pieces to send out for publication this year. I am happy to report that 4 of the 6 are edited and out playing a vigorous game of Submission Tetris as I type this. The remaining two are trying very hard to be short stories instead of flash, so we’ll see what happens there.

I was meant to also participate in a novella contest, but unfortunately Life has derailed that plan. However, writing a novella, and longer works in general, is something I’ve always wanted to do, so I still have it on my WiP docket, and I hope to have better news on that front later on.

SFF Community Happenings

Award season is still going strong here in the SFF world, and the Locus awards are still open for nominations! The beauty of the Locus awards is that anyone can vote for any story published in the eligible year. You don’t need to be a member of anything, you don’t need to pay a fee, and you can write in your favorite stories so long as they are eligible.

I highly encourage anyone who is a fan of SFF stories to go over and cast your vote. The deadline to submit your ballot is April 15th.

And that’s all the news I have for now. I’m hoping to have more goodies to share with you soon.

Keep on writing on.

-Catherine
